Oregon Outreach
Sep 10, 2020 12:00 PM
Thirty two years ago upon moving back to Portland, Ms. Black founded Oregon Outreach, Inc. This non-profit organization worked with gang identified youth by providing counseling, job training, job placement and educational assistance. During this time Ms. Black developed the first African-American fire crew, The Freedom Fire Fighters. Then Governor, Barbara Roberts, awarded each member of the crew a Certificate of Appreciation for their service to the community and state. Ms. Black, seeing the number of youth who had left school, opened an accredited alternative High School for young men returning from incarceration, a middle school for expelled middle school students, and a school for drug and alcohol affected youth that provided education, intervention and treatment. Eventually all the programs were combined and became the Gladys McCoy Academy.

Hope for the Homeless
Sep 24, 2020 12:00 PM
Hope for the Homeless Foundation believes it has a new, innovative approach to tackling the growing homeless crisis in the Portland area. Their mandate is to financially support grassroots organizations that are doing effective work helping the homeless return to stability, so they are no longer living on the streets. President Doug Marshall and board member Jerry Mason are here to report on Hope for the Homeless Foundation’s initial assessments, observations, and successes. Laurie Carlson was an early donor, and in her shy manner, suggested that Hope for the Homeless Foundation maybe an organization that Rotary should consider financially supporting. This will be a zoom meeting - please use the "Contact Us" button at the top of the page if you would like to join us. |

Gracie/Kuchy Sanchez Youth Education Program
Oct 01, 2020 12:00 PM
My name is Tina Sweeney and I am the Coordinator for the San Felipe Rotary scholarship program. East Portland Rotary Club has been a sponsor for the program as long as I have been involved in San Felipe Rotary, which is over 7 years. According to Dana Clark about 10 years before that. Your club has been a sponsor for the Nolazco family since 2014. When I took over the program in 2013, I asked Dana if she would like a family of three instead of 3 individuals. That is when the relationship between your club and the Nolazco family began. I would like to explain how the Gracie/Kuchy Youth Education program works and answer any questions you may have. We meet on Zoom. If you would like to join us, please us the contact us button at the top of the page to request the meeting link.

Structural Racism in the American Justice System
Oct 08, 2020 12:00 PM
The Criminal Justice system is rooted deeply in America’s racist past. The years after the war on crime and the war on drugs, our criminal justice system has led to a system where we have 5% of the world’s population and 25% of the world’s prison population. The system also is profoundly racist, with massive disparities. Black individuals are 700% more likely to go to prison than their white counterparts. We must identify the shortcomings of the system and look for ways to rehabilitate it constructively. Part of fixing our criminal justice system is basing our approaches on empirical research. It is important that we base both our critiques and our solutions on sound, informed evidence.

IFixit
Oct 15, 2020 12:00 PM
iFixit is the world’s largest online repair manual. Our mission is to teach everyone to fix every thing, and to advocate for Right to Repair laws to be passed in the United States. Why? In the last few years, we passed 50 million tons of e-waste. Repair is a crucial part of the product life cycle. Our electronic devices are made with toxic chemicals and finite resources, and fixing the devices we already have keeps them out of the landfill even longer.
We meet on Zoom. If you would like to join us, please us the contact us button at the top of the page to request the meeting link. |

Reimagining Education in the Midst of a Pandemic
Dec 17, 2020 12:00 PM
I will discuss the major challenges schools are facing as a result of the pandemic and how these challenges have forced educators to be innovative, creative, and relevant to 21st century education. From culturally responsive teaching practices, to cultivating genius in the classroom; schools have had to shift the way teachers present information to support learning from a place of equity that meets diverse learning needs. Central Catholic High School is using every opportunity for growth and to forge a new path in best educational practices. We meet on Zoom. Loneliness: A Silent Epidemic
Feb 04, 2021 12:00 PM
Over the past two decades, incredible technological advances have been made. While these advances connected people across the globe, they simultaneously gave rise to a public health crisis: Loneliness. When COVID-19 struck in March 2020, people were catapulted into a nearly pure digital lifestyle. With so much isolation and disconnection, loneliness has now dug itself deeper into the hearts of many across the globe.

Kenya Keys
Feb 18, 2021 12:00 PM
Kenya Keys bridges two cultures - acting as a catalyst for educational achievement and leadership development - unlocking the potential of nearly 1000 students over the past 15 years. Our work is guided by these beliefs: Education is the most important tool we can use against poverty. Volunteerism is crucial to a vital, dynamic organization fostering global citizenship. Cultural exchange and exposure is vitally enriching for Americans and Africans. There should be no giving that increases dependency, invites discontent, and isolates the givers from the receivers. We provide opportunities, not handouts. All essential decisions should be made by local leadership and teams, giving the community crucial ownership, accountability, and leadership experience. We believe all people have the ability within themselves to solve their greatest challenges. We thank you for supporting our vision of empowering students and changing lives through education! This presentation will highlight the students, programs, and projects of Kenya Keys to help the East Portland Rotary awareness of the organization’s they have supported for several years. We also will share the current and future vision and goals of the organization and then address questions for the group. |
